The Aluminaire House is a landmark of early European-inspired modernism and the International Style. Designed in 1931 as a prototype for affordable, mass-produced housing, it showcased innovative use of lightweight, off-the-shelf materials, most notably aluminum and glass, highlighting the potential of industrialized construction.
Now located at the Palm Springs Art Museum, the house has been carefully restored to preserve its integrity while serving as a public educational exhibit. Its expansive glazing, open floor plan, and honest expression of structure reflect core modernist principles of simplicity and efficiency.
WT Group AEC played a key role in re-engineering the structure for its new location in the California desert. The engineering effort addressed significant challenges, including degraded or missing original aluminum members, higher seismic demands, and extreme desert temperature fluctuations. Solutions were developed to reuse as much of the historic structure as possible while discreetly upgrading the lateral and gravity systems to meet current building codes, ensuring both safety and faithful preservation of the original design intent.
